Description

The Alexander Green Parrot is one of the largest parakeet species, instantly impressive for its size, long tail, and bright green plumage, with the male sporting a deep black and pink ring around the neck. They exude a noble, almost regal presence. They are known to be intelligent, independent, and sometimes reserved, often requiring a patient approach to taming. While they can talk and mimic, they are generally less inclined to cuddle than smaller parrots, preferring to interact on their own terms. Their vocalizations are deep, booming squawks and screeches, louder and lower-pitched than the smaller Indian Ringneck, making noise a significant consideration for potential owners.

Tamability and Maintenance: Alexander Parrots are tamable, but success requires patience, firm boundaries, and consistent handling from a young age. They are a high maintenance bird, mainly due to their large size, need for spacious housing, and high intelligence, which requires constant mental work. They thrive on independence but still need significant daily out-of-cage exercise and interaction. They can be prone to “bluffing” during puberty, necessitating an owner who can confidently manage a large, strong-beaked bird. Their long lifespan is 25-40 years.

Diet: The diet should be based on a high-quality, large parrot pellet formula. They have a higher requirement for fruits and certain types of fat than desert-dwelling parrots, so the pellet base should be generously supplemented with fresh fruits (papaya, mango, apples) and a wide variety of vegetables. They enjoy a limited amount of healthy nuts (like almonds) as a reward for training and good behavior.
