They are medium-sized, typically ash-gray with a distinctive red tail. African Greys are highly complex, sensitive, and emotionally nuanced birds. They are an extremely high maintenance pet, demanding several hours of dedicated, structured interaction and mental work daily. They must have a constant supply of puzzle and foraging toys to prevent extreme boredom, which rapidly leads to severe feather plucking, a common issue in this species. Due to their high sensitivity, they require a calm, stable environment. They are a life-long commitment, often living 50-70 years.

Diet: African Greys are prone to calcium deficiency, Vitamin A deficiency, and obesity. Their diet should be centered on a high-quality, African Grey-specific pellet formula (about 70%). They require daily supplementation with calcium-rich vegetables (dark leafy greens, broccoli) and Vitamin A-rich foods (carrots, sweet potatoes). They also benefit from healthy fats, such as a small portion of walnuts or almonds daily. Avoid avocados, chocolate, and high-sugar fruits.
