Amazon Parrots encompass many species, but generally share a stocky build, vibrant green base plumage, and a characteristically boisterous personality. They are known for their high energy, playful nature, and immense loyalty. Most Amazons, such as the Double Yellow-Headed and Blue-Fronted, are excellent talkers and singers, often performing opera-like, enthusiastic vocal displays. They are renowned for their “macho” bluffing behavior, especially around two years of age, which requires firm, consistent handling. They are extremely loud and their booming flock calls are a major consideration for owners, making them unsuitable for most apartments.

Tamability and Maintenance: Amazon Parrots are highly tamable and make fantastic, interactive, and affectionate pets. They are a high maintenance bird due to their strong personalities and immense need for interaction. They require at least 2-4 hours of dedicated, out-of-cage time daily for socialization and exercise. They are also prone to obesity, so they need plenty of opportunities to climb and move. A large, sturdy cage is essential. Their commitment is long-term, with many species living 40-60 years.

Diet: Amazons are prone to Vitamin A deficiency and obesity, so a low-fat, high-nutritional diet is critical. The foundation should be a high-quality, Amazon-specific pellet (60–70%), generously supplemented daily with fresh, Vitamin A-rich vegetables (cooked sweet potato, carrots, bell peppers) and dark leafy greens. Fruits and nuts should be limited due to their sugar and fat content, used only as small, occasional treats to prevent dangerous weight gain.
