Description

The Black-Legged Caique is a rare sub-species of the White-Bellied Caique, sharing the same brilliant plumage—green back, white belly, and orange-yellow head—but distinguished by its dark, black-grey legs. Like all Caiques, they possess an incredibly energetic, playful, and clownish temperament. They are famous for their unique “hopping” mode of travel, preferring to walk, jump, and climb rather than fly long distances. They are confident, highly affectionate, and intensely curious, often using their strong beaks to explore everything. Their vocalizations are a mix of loud whistles, squeals, and persistent chattering, which can be surprisingly loud for their size.

Tamability and Maintenance: Black-Legged Caiques are highly tamable and thrive on daily hands-on interaction. They are a high maintenance pet due to their immense need for physical and mental activity. They require several hours of supervised out-of-cage playtime daily and a constant rotation of highly durable toys for climbing, shredding, and chewing. Their intelligence requires enrichment through foraging activities. They are known for being cage-territorial and require consistent training to manage this. Their expected lifespan is 25-40 years.

Diet: The diet should be a high-quality, small to medium-sized parrot pellet (around 60-70%). The remainder must be composed of fresh, chopped fruits and vegetables; Caiques have a higher natural affinity for fruits (berries, mango) but require a balance with vegetables (peppers, sweet potatoes). Seeds and nuts must be strictly limited to occasional, healthy treats for training to prevent obesity.
