The Blue and Gold Macaw is one of the most popular and recognizable large parrots, cherished for its striking blue and yellow plumage and its charming, relatively gentle disposition. They are highly intelligent, playful, and known for their strong capacity to mimic speech and sounds, making them highly entertaining companions. Unlike some other macaws, they are generally sweet-natured and tend to bond well with the entire family, though they can still be prone to loud “flock calls” at dawn and dusk. They have a reputation for being one of the best-tempered large macaws, often enjoying physical attention and cuddles.

Tamability and Maintenance: Blue and Gold Macaws are considered highly tamable and thrive on social interaction. They are a high maintenance bird, demanding daily one-on-one time (2-4 hours minimum) and a large amount of mental stimulation. Without this, they will quickly develop behavioral issues like screaming or plucking. Their care requires commitment to a lifespan of up to 60 years. Their large cage must be robust to withstand their powerful beaks. Diet should consist primarily of a balanced, formulated parrot pellet (approximately 50% of the diet), supplemented with a rich variety of fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Favorites include mango, papaya, bananas, broccoli, and dark leafy greens. They enjoy nuts (like Brazil nuts and walnuts) but these should be limited to treats due to their high-fat content.
