The Catalina Macaw is a popular first-generation hybrid, typically bred from a Scarlet Macaw and a Blue and Gold Macaw. The result is a stunning colour blend, often featuring a deep red-orange chest fading into bright yellow and blue-green wings—a true kaleidoscope of colour. They are known for their highly social, outgoing, and playful temperament, often inheriting the beautiful colouring of the Scarlet and the excellent talking ability and affability of the Blue and Gold. Catalina Macaws are incredibly intelligent and thrive on being the center of attention. Like all large macaws, they possess a very loud, far-reaching vocalization, which is a vital consideration for noise-sensitive areas.

Tamability and Maintenance: Catalina Macaws are highly tamable and exceptionally affectionate companions. They are an extremely high maintenance pet, requiring significant commitment. They demand several hours of dedicated daily interaction and a stimulating environment with puzzles and foraging toys to satisfy their high intelligence. Their size necessitates a large, durable cage and a continuous supply of heavy-duty chew items to prevent boredom and destructive behavior. Their lifespan often exceeds 50 years, requiring a multi-decade commitment.

Diet: A Catalina Macaw’s diet should be centered on a high-quality, large parrot pellet formula. This must be heavily supplemented with a rich variety of fresh, washed fruits and vegetables daily to provide essential vitamins and minerals.
