Description

The Green Wing Macaw is the second largest of the macaws, a striking bird with a predominant deep red plumage, a distinct band of brilliant green across its wings, and blue feathers on the wing tips and tail. Often confused with the Scarlet Macaw, the Green Wing is characterized by its much gentler and more placid temperament. They are frequently described as “gentle giants” and are known for being very affectionate, often seeking out physical attention and cuddles. They form deep, lasting bonds with their families and are highly intelligent, responding well to consistent, positive training. Like all large macaws, their vocalizations are powerful and booming, making them unsuitable for close urban housing.

Tamability and Maintenance: Green Wing Macaws are considered highly tamable and make excellent, dedicated companions for experienced owners. They are an extremely high maintenance pet. They require several hours of one-on-one time daily, a consistent routine, and a massive, durable enclosure to accommodate their size and powerful chewing instinct. Mental stimulation through foraging, training, and heavy-duty chew toys is non-negotiable for their mental health. Their commitment is significant, with a lifespan of 50 years or more.

Diet: Due to their size, their dietary needs are substantial. The foundation should be a high-quality, large parrot pellet, supplemented generously with a wide array of fresh, washed fruits and vegetables daily, such as corn, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and mango. They enjoy nuts like almonds and walnuts, but these should be used sparingly as high-value treats to prevent obesity and related health issues.
