Description

The Harlequin Macaw is a “designer” hybrid parrot, typically resulting from a cross between a Blue and Gold Macaw and a Green Wing Macaw. This blend often results in a spectacularly colored bird with shades of blue, green, and orange-yellow, and a highly desirable temperament. Harlequins tend to inherit the affability and strong talking ability of the Blue and Gold, combined with the gentle, cuddly nature of the Green Wing, making them often easier to manage than the pure Scarlet or some other large macaws. They are playful, very intelligent, and intensely social, thriving on being the center of family activity. Their vocalizations are loud, classic macaw calls, requiring housing that can tolerate significant noise.

Tamability and Maintenance: Harlequin Macaws are highly tamable and exceptionally bond-forming. They are an extremely high maintenance pet, inheriting the massive size and intense social needs of both parent species. They require a vast cage and need several hours of dedicated human interaction and out-of-cage time every day. Without sufficient mental stimulation and social interaction, they are prone to destructive chewing and excessive screaming. Consistency and continuous training are vital throughout their long lifespan, which can easily reach 50-60 years.

Diet: As a large macaw hybrid, their diet must be meticulously balanced. It should be centered on a large parrot pellet formula. This must be supplemented daily with a wide and varied range of fresh, washed fruits and vegetables. The inclusion of nuts (like macadamia and Brazil nuts) should be limited to small, measured portions as healthy enrichment treats, keeping in mind the risk of obesity in macaws.
