Description

The Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo, or Leadbeater’s Cockatoo, is considered one of the most beautiful cockatoos, featuring a white body, a salmon-pink wash on the chest, and a spectacular, striped red and yellow crest. Unlike the Umbrella or Moluccan, this species is known for a more reserved, less “cuddly” personality. They are intelligent and can be affectionate, but they often prefer a structured routine and can become easily stressed by high-activity environments. They form strong bonds but are generally less clingy than their white counterparts. Their vocalizations are loud, shrieking calls, but they tend to be less frequent than other large cockatoos, often calling only at dawn and dusk.

Tamability and Maintenance: Major Mitchell’s Cockatoos are tamable but require a patient, experienced owner familiar with their more sensitive nature. They are a high maintenance pet, primarily because of their sensitivity and propensity for behavioral issues like plucking if stressed or bored. They require a spacious cage, plenty of quiet time, and a consistent routine. While they need daily interaction, it is often more observational than physical petting. They have a long commitment, often living 50-70 years.

Diet: Similar to other cockatoos, the Major Mitchell’s requires a low-fat, high-nutritional diet. The foundation should be a high-quality, large parrot pellet. This must be supplemented with fresh, non-starchy vegetables (broccoli, leafy greens, carrots) and a limited amount of fruit. They naturally forage for seeds and grains, so a very small amount of a high-quality seed mix can be included for enrichment, but high-fat nuts must be strictly limited to occasional treats.
