Description

The Military Macaw is a striking olive-green parrot, distinguished by its red forehead and the bright blue and gold flashes on its wings. They are known for being spirited, curious, and incredibly intelligent. Military Macaws possess a wonderfully playful and mischievous temperament, often enjoying acrobatics and “wrestling” with their favorite human. While they are not as vibrantly colored as Scarlets or Blue and Golds, they compensate with a highly engaging and affectionate personality. They are known to be good talkers, capable of learning a decent vocabulary, and are prone to the characteristic loud macaw vocalizations, which is a key consideration for their housing environment.

Tamability and Maintenance: Military Macaws are very tamable and make fantastic pets when hand-raised and consistently socialized. They are high maintenance, needing a great deal of mental enrichment and at least 2 hours of direct human attention every day. Like all macaws, they require a very large and sturdy cage and a continuous supply of non-toxic wooden toys for chewing, a natural behavior essential for their psychological well-being. A 50-60 year lifespan means they are a long-term commitment. Diet should be centered on a high-quality formulated pellet, making up about 60-70% of their intake, to ensure balanced nutrition. The remainder of the diet must be a diverse mix of fresh, washed fruits and vegetables, such as corn, peas, bell peppers, apples, and berries. Nuts, like almonds, are excellent as training rewards but must be limited.
