The Mustached Parakeet, or Moustached Parakeet, is a visually appealing Asian species known for the distinctive black stripe or “mustache” that runs from the base of the beak to the neck. They are predominantly green with a bluish head and a salmon-pink chest. They are highly active, bold, and inquisitive, possessing an outgoing personality that enjoys exploration and interaction. They are considered good talkers, capable of learning phrases and mimicking household sounds. Their vocalizations are loud, sharp whistles and squawks, making noise a key factor in their suitability as a pet.

Tamability and Maintenance: Mustached Parakeets are highly tamable and thrive on daily hands-on interaction and socialization. They are a moderate to high maintenance bird. Their high energy and intelligence require a spacious, sturdy cage that allows for climbing and a continuous rotation of stimulating toys, as they are strong chewers. They need dedicated out-of-cage time daily for exercise and interaction to prevent boredom and anxiety. Consistency in training and socialization is vital to manage their occasionally feisty nature. Their lifespan is typically 20-25 years.

Diet: The core of their diet should be a high-quality, small parrot pellet. This must be supplemented daily with a wide variety of fresh, washed fruits (apples, grapes, citrus in moderation) and vegetables (broccoli, peas, carrots). They naturally enjoy seed, so a high-quality, limited seed mix can be included for enrichment, but pellets and fresh foods must form the majority of their intake.
