Description

The Palm Cockatoo, also known as the Goliath Cockatoo, is one of the most distinctive and largest of the parrot family. It is immediately recognizable by its slate-black plumage, immense black beak, and the bright red cheek patches that change colour when the bird is excited. They are characterized by a highly intelligent, solemn, and sensitive temperament. Unlike the excitable white cockatoos, Palm Cockatoos are often calmer but can be prone to nervous habits or feather plucking if their complex needs are not met. They are known for their unique drumming display, where they use a stick to beat on a hollow log. Their vocalizations are deep, booming calls, but they are generally less frequent screamers than other cockatoo species.

Tamability and Maintenance: Palm Cockatoos are tamable, but their level of devotion is unique; they often bond intensely with one person. They are an extremely high maintenance bird requiring a highly specialized level of care, space, and environmental enrichment. Their enormous size requires one of the largest and most durable cages available, and their powerful beaks can easily destroy typical bird toys and perches, necessitating heavy-duty materials. They need several hours of dedicated daily interaction and mental stimulation. They are a multi-generational commitment, living 40-60 years or more.

Diet: The Palm Cockatoo’s diet must be carefully managed. Due to its propensity for high cholesterol and liver disease, the diet should be primarily a low-fat pellet formula. Their natural diet involves palm nuts, which should be offered as a controlled enrichment item. A wide variety of fresh vegetables (dark leafy greens, sweet potatoes) and fruits should be offered daily, but high-fat seeds and nuts must be severely restricted.
