Description

The Pearl Cockatiel is a striking colour mutation characterized by the delicate, lace-like white or yellow scalloping (“pearls”) visible on the edges of the feathers, most pronounced on the wings and back. This pattern often fades in adult male Pearl Cockatiels, while it remains vivid in females. Temperamentally, the Pearl Cockatiel is identical to its cousins: a gentle, docile, and highly affectionate companion. They are excellent family pets, easily forming bonds, enjoying cuddles, and responding well to training, often becoming proficient whistlers. Their soft chirps and melodic whistles are non-intrusive, making them suitable for most home environments.

Tamability and Maintenance: Pearl Cockatiels are highly tamable and thrive on daily human interaction. They are a moderate maintenance pet, requiring a stable routine and consistent out-of-cage time (at least 1–2 hours) for socialization and exercise to prevent loneliness. A single bird will be more focused on its human companion. A spacious cage with horizontal bars and a variety of perches and enrichment toys are essential. As dusty birds, they need regular misting or bathing opportunities. Their typical lifespan is 15–20 years.

Diet: A balanced diet is paramount to prevent obesity and illness. The foundation should be a high-quality Cockatiel pellet formula (about 70% of intake). This must be supplemented daily with fresh, washed, chopped vegetables (broccoli, kale, carrots, sweet potatoes) and a small amount of fruit. Seeds should be strictly limited to small, healthy treats for training only, as a high-fat diet can lead to liver disease and feather issues.
