Description

The Plum Headed Parakeet is an elegant Asian species, famed for the male’s rich, deep plum-red head colouration (females have a bluish-grey head). They possess a quieter, calmer, and more dignified temperament compared to the energetic Ringneck Parakeet. Plum Heads are not known for being overly boisterous or loud, making a soft, melodious call. They are generally shyer and less inclined toward aggressive chewing, preferring to be graceful and quiet observers. They form bonds with their owners but are often more independent, making them excellent, gentle companions for a calm household.

Tamability and Maintenance: Plum Headed Parakeets are tamable if hand-fed, becoming gentle and affectionate pets, though they may not be as demanding as other parrots. They are a moderate maintenance bird. Their long tail feathers necessitate a tall, spacious cage. They require daily out-of-cage time for exercise and socialization, but their need for stimulation is more focused on gentle activity rather than aggressive chewing. They thrive on consistency and a calm environment. Their typical lifespan is 15-20 years.

Diet: Their diet should be a high-quality, small parrot pellet (the core of the diet), supplemented daily with a wide variety of fresh fruits (apple, pear, berries) and vegetables (corn, peas, dark greens). They also enjoy a small amount of sprouted seeds. Seeds and nuts should be limited to small, healthy treats for training to ensure they maintain a balanced, low-fat intake, which is critical for their health.
