Description

The Severe Macaw, also known as the Chestnut-Fronted Macaw, is the largest of the mini-macaw group. It is recognizable by its compact body size, mostly green plumage, and the distinctive chestnut-coloured patch just above the beak. They possess a bold, feisty, and highly intelligent personality that is often described as “big parrot personality in a small package.” Severe Macaws are highly playful and engaging but can be prone to nipping or temperamental behavior if not handled consistently. They are talented mimics and are highly interactive, thriving on constant mental engagement. Be warned: for a “mini” macaw, they are still capable of producing a very loud, shrill screech.

Tamability and Maintenance: Severe Macaws are highly tamable and become fiercely devoted to their owners. They are a moderate to high maintenance bird. Due to their high intelligence, they require a minimum of 2 hours of direct human interaction and complex mental stimulation daily through foraging and puzzle toys. A bored Severe Macaw is a destructive chewer, so a sturdy cage (even for their size) and a constant supply of wooden toys are essential. Their commitment is long-term, with an average lifespan of 25-30 years.

Diet: Their diet should be a balanced regimen of a high-quality, medium parrot pellet formula (about 60% of the diet). This is to be supplemented daily with a rich mix of fresh, chopped vegetables (dark leafy greens, peas, carrots) and a limited amount of fruit. They enjoy a variety of seeds and nuts, but these must be severely limited to only occasional treats to prevent obesity and associated health problems common in macaws.
