Description

The Sun Conure is a spectacular parrot, famously named for its brilliant, fiery-hued plumage of yellow, orange, and red. These are not birds for the faint of heart or quiet households. Sun Conures are known for their incredibly affectionate nature and their playful, clownish antics. They form extremely strong bonds with their owners, often demanding constant attention. They are also, however, notorious for their extremely loud, piercing screams—their natural flock calls—which are a major factor to consider before ownership, making them unsuitable for close-quarter housing like apartments. They are intelligent and can be taught tricks and simple words, but their volume is their defining characteristic.

Tamability and Maintenance: Sun Conures are highly tamable and thrive on daily hands-on interaction and socialization. They are a high maintenance pet for a medium-sized bird. Their need for attention is immense, and a bored or lonely Sun Conure will quickly resort to excessive screaming or destructive behavior. They need a large cage to accommodate their high energy, a variety of perches, and safe, stimulating toys for chewing and foraging. Their expected lifespan is 25-30 years, a significant commitment. Diet should primarily consist of a high-quality formulated conure pellet (60-70% of the diet), supplemented with a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables daily, such as corn, dark leafy greens, berries, apples, and peppers. Nuts and seeds should be limited to treats only to prevent fatty liver disease.
