Description

The Triton Cockatoo is a sub-species of the Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo, slightly smaller than the Greater Sulphur-Crested but distinguished by a more curved and broader crest. They are famed for their high intelligence, playfulness, and their incredibly affectionate, cuddly nature. They are often described as “velcro birds,” as they demand constant physical attention and emotional interaction, bonding fiercely with their owners. They are highly energetic and inquisitive, using their strong beaks to explore everything. Like all large white cockatoos, they possess an extremely loud, ear-piercing scream—a major, non-negotiable factor in ownership that requires careful housing consideration.

Tamability and Maintenance: Triton Cockatoos are highly tamable and thrive on socialization. They are an extremely high maintenance pet, demanding 3-5 hours of dedicated, direct human attention daily. Their high energy and intelligence require a massive, durable cage and a constant supply of heavy-duty, chewable toys to prevent severe behavioural issues like chronic screaming and self-mutilation (feather plucking). Their significant lifespan of 50-70 years requires a multi-decade commitment from a dedicated owner.

Diet: A Triton Cockatoo’s diet must be low in fat to prevent common health issues. The base should be a high-quality, large parrot pellet formula. This must be supplemented daily with a generous portion of fresh, chopped vegetables (dark leafy greens, sweet potatoes) and a small amount of fruit. Nuts and seeds should be used sparingly as occasional treats or training rewards only.
