Why routine and familiar surroundings matter
Birds remember more than people expect. Scrub jays remember what they hid, where and when, and crows remember human faces for up to about 3 years. Birds mostly find hidden food by remembering where it is, not by smell. A bird that knows its routine and its cage is working from a lot of memory, and a change in all of it at once can be stressful. Many birds also fear new objects, and captive birds can show stress when separated from a bonded partner, such as eating and preening less. That is not proof of grief. Researchers still debate how to interpret many of these findings, so treat them as a reason to plan carefully, not as a guarantee.
