Adopting vs buying

**Adopting usually costs considerably less than buying, but a rehomed adult can come with habits you have to work through, so choose by the bird and your home rather than by price alone.**

Both routes end with the same long commitment. Per Best Friends Animal Society, small parrots live around 20 to 30 years and large ones 60 to 80, and an owner should expect 2 to 3 hours a day out of the cage, plus noise and possible biting or feather plucking.

Adopting compared with buying

Cost: Adopting costs considerably less than buying. For the price of a young bird, see our bird prices guide.

Personality: An adopted adult's personality is already known. A young bird's character is still developing, so you are choosing potential.

Talking: A bird that already talks is the only guaranteed talker. A baby may or may not learn to talk.

Matching: Good rescues match the bird to your home. When you buy, the matching is up to you, so ask plenty of questions.

Diet and habits: For a rehomed adult, a seed-only diet can be hard to change. A young bird can be started on a varied diet from the beginning.

Special needs: Adopted birds may have special needs, so check any rescue or rehoming source first.

Not every rehomed bird was abused, so do not assume a damaged past, and do not assume a perfect one either.

Adopted birds may have special needs. Ask what the bird has been through and how it behaves before you commit.

The UAE reality

In our research we did not find an established parrot rescue organisation in the UAE. That is what we found, not a claim that none exists, so if you come across a rescue, check it carefully first, as the World Parrot Trust advises. Check the bird and its papers carefully before you agree to take it.

If the bird is a CITES-listed species, the change of ownership should be registered with MOCCAE through its ownership registration service for CITES-listed species. Ask the current owner for the bird's papers before you agree to take it.

UAE animal welfare law

Under UAE Federal Law No. 16 of 2007 (Animal Welfare Law), it is the responsibility of pet owners to provide adequate care, nutrition, and veterinary attention. Adopted birds must be kept in species-appropriate housing with access to clean food and water.
