People ask “how much is a cockatoo” and mean the sticker price. For a cockatoo that number is honest but incomplete. Our care guide calls them the most emotionally demanding parrots in the trade, and describes owners calling them toddlers in feathers. The price of the bird decides who can start; the cage, the diet, the vet bills and the daily hours decide who can finish.
This page sets out the costs we can source from our own published guides and the live catalogue. Where we do not have a figure for a cockatoo, we say so rather than borrow one. For the full care picture, read the cockatoo care guide; for the paperwork, read are cockatoos legal in the UAE and UAE exotic bird laws.
1. What the bird costs (live)
These ranges are read from the live Dubai Birds catalogue and match the rows on the live AED price guide. Species with no bird in stock today are left out.
| Cockatoo species | Price (AED, live) |
|---|---|
| Galah / Rose-Breasted CockatooAppendix II | AED 6,500 |
| Bare-Eyed CockatooAppendix II | AED 7,000 |
| Goffin's CockatooAppendix I | AED 7,500 |
| Sulphur-Crested CockatooAppendix II | AED 9,500 |
| Umbrella CockatooAppendix II | AED 13,500 |
| Moluccan CockatooAppendix I | AED 27,000 |
| Major Mitchell's CockatooAppendix II | AED 28,000 |
| Citron-Crested CockatooAppendix I | AED 29,000 |
| Triton CockatooAppendix II | AED 47,000 |
| Palm CockatooAppendix I | AED 60,000 |
Price depends on age, talking ability and tameness. Recently weaned hand-raised birds sit at the lower end of each species’ range and talking adults at the upper end. Rarer species (Major Mitchell’s, Moluccan, Triton, Citron-Crested and Palm) sit at the upper end of the table.
2. Why the lifespan is the real cost driver
Lifespans from our cockatoo care guide:
- ·Goffin's: 35 to 45 years. Galah: 40 to 60 years.
- ·Bare-Eyed: 40 to 60 years. Citron-Crested: 40 to 60 years.
- ·Umbrella and Sulphur-Crested: 50 to 70 years. Triton: 50 to 70 years.
- ·Major Mitchell's: 50 to 80 years. Moluccan: 60 to 80 years. Palm: 60 to 90 years.
Sexual maturity arrives at 3 to 6 years for smaller species and 5 to 8 for the largest. Hormonal behaviour intensifies sharply at that stage and is the leading reason cockatoos are surrendered. Cockatoos commonly outlive their owners, which is why we ask every cockatoo buyer to name a successor.
We have deliberately not multiplied a monthly figure by 60 years here. Our macaw page does that arithmetic for a Blue-and-Gold because it has a full line-item table. We do not have one for cockatoos, and a lifetime total built on guessed inputs would not be honest.
3. The cage
| Cockatoo group | Minimum cage (W x D x H) |
|---|---|
| Goffin's, Galah, Bare-Eyed | 100 x 75 x 150 cm, 2.5 cm bars |
| Umbrella, Sulphur-Crested, Triton | 120 x 90 x 180 cm, 3 cm bars |
| Moluccan, Palm | 150 x 110 x 200 cm, 4 cm bars |
Stainless steel only. Cockatoo beaks crush chrome and zinc-plated cages, and lead or zinc poisoning is fatal. Cockatoos also pick simple latches in seconds, so the cage needs solid double locks.
Price: our macaw cost page prices a stainless steel cage of exactly 120 x 90 x 180 cm at AED 4,500 to 9,000, which is the Umbrella, Sulphur-Crested and Triton size. We have no published price for the other two sizes, so we do not quote one.
4. Food, toys, humidity and vet care
The diet is fixed by the care guide: 50% pellets, 35% vegetables, 10% sprouted legumes and 5% raw nuts and seeds, for a medium cockatoo of about 500 g. Everything on the produce list is stocked year-round at UAE supermarkets. In summer, uneaten fresh food comes out after 90 minutes and water bowls are refreshed twice a day.
We do not publish a cockatoo-specific monthly food bill. The nearest figures we have are:
| Reference point | AED |
|---|---|
| Pellets, fresh produce and treats for a medium parrot, per month (beginner guide) | 250 - 500 |
| Pellets plus produce and nuts for a Blue-and-Gold Macaw, per month (macaw page) | 400 + 350 |
| Toys, per month, small to medium species (beginner guide) | 60 - 150 |
| Annual avian vet check with faecal and PCR re-screen, African Grey and macaw pages | 800 / 900 |
| Cool-mist humidifier (beginner guide) | 250 - 400 |
Two cockatoo-specific points sit behind those numbers. Cockatoos destroy chewable toys in days, and the care guide asks you to rotate at least eight toys a week. And they need 50 to 65% humidity, because dry AC air causes dust skin, beak overgrowth and feather destruction; Dubai indoor air with full AC often sits at 25 to 35%.
For vet care, the care guide’s non-negotiable is a PBFD and polyomavirus PCR test at purchase, because cockatoos are the highest-risk family for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease. Our beginner guide says to hold an emergency vet reserve of 2,000 to 5,000 AED for smaller birds; we do not have a published emergency figure for a cockatoo.
5. Time and noise, the costs without a price tag
Four to six hours out of the cage daily, with at least two to three hours of physical contact, plus a 10 to 15 minute training session. If a household cannot give that, the care guide’s advice is to buy a cockatiel, conure or African Grey instead.
Noise levels from the care guide:
- ·Goffin's: 90 to 105 dB. Galah and Bare-Eyed: 85 to 95 dB.
- ·Umbrella: 105 to 125 dB. Sulphur-Crested: 110 to 125 dB.
- ·Citron-Crested, Triton, Major Mitchell's and Palm: 100 to 120 dB.
- ·Moluccan: 125 to 135 dB, the loudest companion bird in the world.
Only Goffin’s and Galah cockatoos are suggested for apartment buyers in JLT, Marina or Downtown, and only with strict morning and evening enrichment. For everything larger, apartment ownership is rarely realistic.
6. Cost-cutting that backfires
- A cheaper chrome or zinc-plated cage. Lead and zinc poisoning is fatal, and a cockatoo will chew it.
- A sunflower-heavy seed mix instead of pellets and vegetables. It causes fatty liver disease and hormonal aggression within 2 to 3 years.
- Skipping the PCR-tested bird. Cockatoos are the highest-risk family for PBFD, which is viral and often fatal.
- A Dubizzle or Instagram listing with no paperwork. Cockatoos enter the Gulf grey market through Indonesia and Pakistan, and trading CITES species without permits can bring fines of up to AED 2 million and possible imprisonment under Federal Law No. (5) of 2025.
- Buying a cockatoo for the apartment you already have. A forced rehome over noise costs you the bird.

7. If the budget or the hours do not fit
Our care guide points non-cockatoo households to the cockatiel, the conure or the African Grey. See the cost of owning a cockatiel, the cost of owning a conure and the cost of owning an African Grey, or compare the other large option on the macaw cost page.
