Cost of owning a cockatiel in the UAE

What a cockatiel costs in the UAE: the live price, setup, monthly food, vet care, and the 15 to 20 years you are budgeting for. A small bird, and still a long commitment.

The cockatiel is the most-recommended first parrot at Dubai Birds: small, quiet enough for an apartment, easy to hand-tame, and fed on food you can buy at any UAE supermarket. Our care guide also warns that the “starter bird” label makes new owners think the commitment is small. It isn’t.

This page uses the live catalogue for the bird and our own published guides for the rest. Read it alongside the cockatiel care guide and are cockatiels legal in the UAE.

    1. What the bird costs (live)

Read from the live Dubai Birds catalogue, matching the live AED price guide.

    CockatielPrice (AED, live)
    Cockatiel (Lutino, Pearl, Cinnamon, White-Faced, etc.)Not CITES-listedAED 700

The main price variable is mutation. Lutino, Pearl, Cinnamon and Bronze Fallow cluster near the floor; White-Faced and Dominant Silver run higher. Mutation does not affect lifespan or health when the breeder pairs responsibly.

    2. Setup costs (one-time, before the bird)

From our beginner’s guide, which describes 2026 UAE costs for small and mid-sized birds.

    ItemAED
Cage, depending on size and material600 - 2,500
    Perches, toys, food bowls, cuttlebone300 - 500
    Travel cage and carrier200 - 400
    Avian-safe cleaning supplies100 - 200
UVB lamp and timer, if no balcony access250 - 450
    Cool-mist humidifier250 - 400
    Setup total, before the bird2,000 - 4,500

The cockatiel care guide sets the minimum cage at 60 x 50 x 70 cm for one bird (80 x 50 x 80 cm for two) with 1.5 to 2 cm bar spacing, in stainless or powder-coated steel. The humidifier is not optional in Dubai: indoor air with the AC running often drops to 25 to 35% humidity against the 50 to 60% the guide recommends.

    3. Running costs

    ItemAED
Food and consumables, per month (care guide)80 - 150
Food for small species, per month (beginner guide)100 - 200
Toys, replaced monthly, per month (beginner guide)60 - 150
Annual avian vet check (care guide)200 - 400
Routine check and nail or beak trim, twice yearly (beginner guide)250 - 400 each
Boarding when you travel, per night (beginner guide)60 - 150
Emergency vet reserve to hold (beginner guide)2,000 - 5,000

The two guides give slightly different ranges for the same costs, so both are shown rather than blended. The care guide also recommends a 30-day post-purchase vet check for new owners, because the first month catches the issues that follow a household move. We have no published price for that visit.

    4. First-year and lifetime figures

Our beginner guide sets setup at AED 2,000 to 4,500 before the bird, then food, toys, vet care and an emergency fund on top. The bird is extra, at the live price above or on the live AED price guide.

We do not have a published line-item lifetime build-up for cockatiels, so we do not show one. Lifespan is 15 to 20 years, and the oldest verified cockatiels lived past 28.

    5. Cheap does not mean small

    • ·Time: a single cockatiel needs 3 to 5 hours a day out of the cage and a household member home for at least 4 to 6 hours with active interaction. If nobody is home most of the day, two cockatiels are kinder.
    • ·Diet: 60 to 70% pellets, 25 to 30% fresh vegetables, about 5% fruit, and seed at 5 to 10% of the diet. An all-seed diet is the single biggest reason UAE cockatiels die early.
    • ·Summer: 22 to 26 °C indoors, 50 to 60% humidity, and no AC blast on the cage. Soft food comes out after 90 minutes.
    • ·Hazards: PTFE non-stick cookware fumes kill cockatiels in minutes.

If you are weighing a cockatiel against other birds, see best birds for UAE apartments and the conure cost page.

    6. Cost-cutting that backfires

    • An all-seed diet to save on pellets. The care guide calls it the most common cockatiel killer in the UAE: fatty deposits, breathing trouble, then heart and liver failure.
    • A cheap cage with zinc or lead in the bars. Both are toxic to all parrots and cause slow chronic poisoning.
    • Dowel perches that come with starter cages. Their consistent diameter causes pressure sores within months.
    • Skipping the humidifier. Persistent low humidity dries feathers and irritates sinuses.
    • Buying from a marketplace listing. The bird should come from a hand-raised breeder with a vet check.

    7. Frequently asked questions

How much does a cockatiel cost in Dubai?
Hand-raised cockatiels in the Dubai Birds catalogue currently run AED 700. Mutation colour is the main price variable: Lutino, Pearl, Cinnamon and Bronze Fallow sit close to the floor, while White-Faced and Dominant Silver run higher.
How much does it cost to keep a cockatiel each month?
Roughly AED 80 to 150 per month for food and consumables: pellets, fresh produce, cuttlebone and paper for foraging, according to our cockatiel care guide. Our beginner guide puts food for small species at 100 to 200 AED a month and toys at 60 to 150 AED a month.
What does a cockatiel cost in its first year?
Setup is 2,000 to 4,500 AED before you buy the bird, because of the cage, the UVB lamp and the humidifier, per our beginner guide. The bird is extra, at its live price on this page and on the AED price guide at /bird-prices-uae/.
How much is a vet visit for a cockatiel in Dubai?
An annual avian vet check is typically AED 200 to 400 according to our cockatiel care guide. Our beginner guide budgets a routine check plus nail or beak trim at AED 250 to 400 twice a year. Avian emergencies such as egg-binding or aspergillosis cost 1,500 to 4,500 AED treated, so the beginner guide recommends holding a reserve of 2,000 to 5,000 AED.
How long does a cockatiel live?
15 to 20 years in captivity with proper care, and the oldest verified cockatiels lived past 28. A cockatiel bought today will probably still be alive in 2041.
What size cage does a cockatiel need?
At least 60 cm wide x 50 cm deep x 70 cm tall for one bird, or 80 x 50 x 80 cm for two, with 1.5 to 2 cm bar spacing, in stainless or powder-coated steel. Zinc and lead are toxic to all parrots. Our beginner guide puts cages at AED 600 to 2,500 depending on size and material.
Is one cockatiel cheaper than two?
Two birds need a bigger cage and double the food, but a single cockatiel needs a human household member at home for at least 4 to 6 hours a day with active interaction. If the household is empty most of the day, our care guide says two cockatiels are kinder. We have no published figure for the extra cost of a second bird.
Do cockatiels need CITES paperwork, and does that add cost?
No. Cockatiels are not CITES-listed, so there is no CITES permit to pay for. A standard veterinary health certificate from the seller is enough for legal ownership. See the cockatiel legality page for the detail.
